Former mentors and mentees of the WFA Mentorship Program reunited for a bonus online workshop, “Learning from Mentorship – Your Next Steps’. Offering a space to reflect, reconnect, and plan ahead. This bonus session, supported by Alltech, brought together alumni of the initiative to revisit their mentorship journeys, explore lessons learned, and discuss how to build on their experiences moving forward.
As with previous WFA online workshops, participants engaged in small breakout groups to explore key questions before regrouping for a wider discussion. This format fostered open dialogue and encouraged thoughtful reflections.
One key takeaway from the session was the surprising strength of virtual mentorships. Many participants expressed astonishment at how deep and impactful their video call-based relationships had become. Both mentors and mentees noted significant growth in their ability to navigate challenging conversations- an essential skill in professional development.
The discussion also highlighted the importance of openness and transparency. An unexpected learning for many mentors who joined the program to give back to the industry, was they ended up gaining just as much – if not more – from their mentees.
Looking ahead, the group brainstormed ways to keep the momentum going. Several participants expressed a desire to continue their mentor-mentee relationships beyond the program’s formal duration. Others were keen to reconnect and seek feedback on how their mentorship experience had impacted their partner.
Reflecting on their journeys, some found it eye-opening to compare where they began with where they are now. Many expressed an interest in meeting their mentor or mentee in person to deepen the connection they’d built online.
To close the session, participants were invited to write down one small step they would take in the next 30 days to build on their mentorship experience-and commit to following through. Mentorship doesn’t end with the WFA mentorship program. It’s the beginning of a lifelong journey of growth, connection, and shared success.
